Biography:
Tsuji Giri - the
ancient Japanese Samurai or Ronin rite of ambushing an innocent
passerby in order to test the quality of a newly purchased knife,
blade or sword.
Tsuji Giri are
the leading lights of a raw, noisy wave of talent currently gushing
from Manchester’s murky sonic subculture. Coming from beleaguered
Manchester satellite towns Oldham and Rochdale the band formed
in 1998 out of the ashes of other less ambitious projects. Martin
(Vocals/Guitar) Danny (Guitar) and Consi (Drums) had played together
before, and Ivan (Bass) joined them as a band virgin. They set
about creating the sound they now refer to as ‘Filthy’
and took their racket to the city.
Mobilising fierce
noise-strewn, art-rock guitars, feral vocals and angular, yet
boomingly filthy grooves, the 4 piece have picked up the gauntlet
thrown by luminaries like The Fall, Joy Division, Sonic Youth
and Shellac, and run into a dark and nasty place that sounds like
nowhere else you’ve been.
Their lauded,
incendiary live performances have since gained them a significant
following in Manchester, and their forays into the rest of the
country have left indelible impressions on the souls of noise
lovers nationwide.
Their recorded
output (2 Self-Released EP’s and a Split single with Fellow
Mancs Sonar Yen) had hinted at rather than fully captured the
fire, chaos and glory of their live sets, and the band decided
to put matters right by hiring Steve Albini to record their 2005
Debut album. On reflection he did a pretty decent job of it.
