Biography
The Sonar Yen are:
Mike O'Neill (Vocal/Guitar) Tim Horrocks (Drums), Chris Haslam (Bass) and Tom Long (Guitar).
2004 sees The Sonar Yen release Slow Picture, their hotly anticipated debut album on Soviet Union Records.
The Sonar Yen emerged in 2000 and began to forge a fierce reputation on Manchester's underground circuit with an unyielding live set and the release of two of EP's, The Sonar Yen (2000) and Poison Light(2002)
The current line up was completed in 2003 and the band began writing and recording material that would become the debut album.
Slow Picture captures The Sonar Yen's live intensity and finds the early sprawling post-rock soundscapes now adopting a more direct and engaging approach. The 12 tracks fuse spell-binding collisions of melody with discordant guitars and impassioned vocals. Frenetic drumming spirals around the brooding bass menace and the simple barbed hooks and howls of the guitars.
Fiercely independent in sound and style, The Sonar Yen hail from the same dark North Manchester backdrop that informed the post punk of The Fall and Joy Division, shot through with the flavour of American indie imports like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Fugazi and Nirvana.
